SHELTER IN PLACE
Common Hazards: tornado or winter storm
Action: seek shelter where you are. The safest location will depend upon the hazard.
Primary Supplies: Shelter-in-place supplies stored in your home shelter or supplies you have on hand when you seek shelter.
Secondary Supplies: emergency kit, Grab & Go items, everyday stock (depends on time available for preparation and the type of hazard). An explanation of terms is at the end of this chapter.
Shelter: you may need to shelter in place at home, work, school, or out in the community. You may be traveling or visiting and need to shelter in place.
EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY
Common Hazards: fire, local tsunami, flash flood
Action: evacuate with your pet immediately and then call 911 from a safe location. When told to evacuate by local authorities, EVACUATE with your pet. Don’t wait.
Primary Supplies: emergency kit (only if it’s safe to grab on your way out).
Shelter: your local Red Cross may provide an emergency shelter for immediate sheltering. Longer term sheltering may be provided by family or friends. Assistance from your insurance company, your local Red Cross and others may be available.
EVACUATE WITH WARNING TIME
Common Hazards: wildfire, flood, tsunami
Action: when told to evacuate by local authorities, EVACUATE with your pet.
Primary Supplies: emergency kit.
Secondary Supplies: depending on the hazard warning, you may have time to load and take additional supplies. Begin preparations immediately and add your Grab & Go items and shelter-in-place supplies. If you still have more time, pack up your everyday food items to take with you.
Shelter: Family and friends outside of the evacuations zone may be able to shelter you until the emergency is over. Otherwise, you may need to stay at a pet-friendly hotel away from the affected area. An emergency shelter or mass care shelter may be opened which will take you and possibly your pet.
SHELTER OR EVACUATE — IT DEPENDS
Common Hazards: hurricane
Action: sheltering in place may be safe if flooding is unlikely for your area. Listen to local agency advisories to evacuate and EVACUATE!
Primary Supplies: shelter supplies for sheltering in place / emergency kit if evacuating.
Secondary Supplies: depending on how much time you have before the hazard arrives, you may have time to prepare your home further and buy more supplies.
Shelter: Shelter in place if safe to do so or find shelter with family and friends outside of the evacuations zone. Otherwise, you may need to stay at a pet-friendly hotel away from the affected area. An emergency shelter or mass care shelter may be opened which will take you and possibly your pet.
FOR PET OWNERS
Make sure your pet’s kit remains easily portable even if you have to use a bigger bag or get another box. Your pet’s emergency kit will be the second thing you grab (you’ll grab your own emergency kit first).
